Samsung and LG are developing new types of foldable displays

Wanting to make these gadgets more durable, companies are adopting new technologies when designing next-generation screens. According to a recent leak, two tech giants - LG and Samsung - filed their patents for the creation of flexible matrices with increased "survivability".

According to network sources, LG Display has developed a new method for producing displays. The technology should minimize the formation of wrinkles that occur when the screen, consisting of several layers, is repeatedly folded. Usually, a mechanical stress is created on the fold line, as a result of which deformation of the substrate occurs. LG Display's proprietary method uses a "control layer" that acts as a shock absorber to prevent wrinkling.

Samsung Display went in a similar way, but the vendor plans to use a special glue as a shock absorber that can change the adhesion force during deformation. Thus, when folded, the panel loses its adhesion strength and separates from the support, and when unfolded restores it.

“It uses a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) that adheres or separates at low pressure, which increases the durability of the panel by relieving stress,” says Samsung Display's patent application.

Which of these patents will be the first to see the light, and when manufacturers plan to introduce such displays, the source does not say.
